ARTIST STATEMENT
My work is woven from my most vivid memories, thoughts that keep me up at odd hours, my favorite stories and my intuition. While I gravitate towards watercolor, much of my work is also done using relief printmaking techniques. As my interests shift and change, the concepts and ideas behind my work morph to explore them in more depth. Often the work explores more intimate parts of myself that I normally feel are too vulnerable to look at on their own and, in this way, the work is a tool that I use to better understand my thoughts, opinions, views and experiences.
Organic textures and a combination of subtle, nostalgic tones against vivid hues are something I gravitate towards when creating. Above all, painting the female portait and figure is what I’m most called to. I love to examine what femininity is through different characters in my pieces as I attempt to figure out actual womanhood on my own. My work shares glimpses into moments of my childhood, nightime dreams, made up stories and inner monologue. But describing an entire body of work and artistic practice in approximately 200 words can’t give you a perfect idea of what I really do, you have to experience it for yourself.
ARTIST BIO
Our emerging artist grew up in the Napa Valley, and was homeschooled in a Dome home on twenty acres of wooded property. Scarlett spent her earlier years writing stories, building forts and tearing through the pine forests with her childhood friends in intense games of Capture the Flag and Hide & Go Seek Tag. Her alternate education not only allowed her the opportunity to make multiple stop motion animation films with her classmates, learn and recite countless poems and draft an entire graphic novel, but it gave her the time and space to develop a love for art and a passion for creating.
She picked up watercolors after years of watching her mother paint and it soon became her medium of choice, although in college she also developed a passion for relief printmaking. While the majority of her artistic education has been self taught and much of what she knows is due to trial and error, Scarlett recently completed an AA in Graphic Design at the Santa Rosa Junior College and will is now pursuing a BS in Visual Communication Design at San Francisco State u.
